Final few days of preparation

Long range weather forecast is looking good after the recent heatwave.  My final training walk, completed last week in hot weather for a change, reminded me that I hadn't added sun cream to my list of 'things to take', something that was immediately remedied!

Packed the rucksack today, which without fluids weighs in at just over 12kgs, a weight that I'd been training with and am quite comfortable carrying.  It would reduce considerably during days 3 to 6, as my wife would be supporting me by car so some stuff could be dumped during the day.

Final check also on my GPS.  Emptied of everything 'non Pennine Way' and loaded with daily routes, waypoints and geocaches (50) that I hoped to collect 'en route'.  As 'belt and braces' the individual day routes are all loaded on the fitted SD card, with a combined route loaded to the device just in case the card fails.  Hopefully my Etrex 20 will perform flawlessly like it did in my first 7 months of use and not crash spectacularly like it did a few weeks ago!

Roll on Thursday when I catch the train from Worthing to Edale!

Up and working again!

My trip to Go Outdoors in Southampton on Saturday cost me plenty but I now have a working GPS again.  That was free, Go Outdoors after a quick phone call to Garmin replaced it on the spot, the 'cost' was the price of taking my wife and 9 year old daughter with me!  Daughter got a new bike and a pair of walking shoes, wife bought a fleece ... think it was me that was fleeced though!!

On a more serious note the manager at Go Outdoors couldn't have been more helpful, and the rest of the staff we spoke to were also extremely pleasant, makes a change from staff in many shops these days.

Today I took the Etrex 20 out on a 12 mile walk, having already installed the beta software (2.73 for those interested) that prevents the terminal fault that occurred on my previous Etrex 20.  I don't normally run beta software but this is one occasion when I have as I can't afford to brick my Etrex again, not with the Pennine Way deadline fast approaching.

Well, what a week ... disaster!

My GPS, a Garmin Etrex 20, that had performed flawlessly over the last 7 months since my wife gave it to me as a present, broke ... and I mean broke.  I have 2 other Garmins, so I know quite a bit about them, but this one ... broke.  There is apparently a known fault, that gives a couple of 'Memory Full' warnings then the GPS stops working.  So much so that even a reset doesn't work.  Garmin have a beta software version under test that will fix it, but too late for me.

Rang Go Outdoors, bring it back and we'll exchange it ... so all is not lost and as we're passing their new store in Southampton tomorrow it's getting a visit ... and hopefully will mean I get a new Etrex 20.
